| The
Meadow Bar is part of a Victorian block
of flats and ground level shops,
situated in Buccleuch Street, in
Edinburgh’s ‘Southside’ district,
just south of the Old Town. This
street’s origins lie way back in time
as it was once the main entrance from
the south into Edinburgh. The route
carried on from Buccleuch Sreet
northwards through Bristo Port then down
Candlemaker Row. The strategic
importance of this route continued until
the south Bridge and George IV Bridge
were constructed. This historic area
includes the main campus of the
University of Edinburgh centred around
George Square, the Royal Scottish Museum
and the ‘new’ Museum of Scotland.
It’s bounded on the south and west by
‘The Meadows’, a fine area of
parkland and a well-used recreational
area. To the east are fine views of
Arthur’s Seat, a ‘miniature
mountain’ – actually the rugged
remnants of an ancient volcano.
Throughout the area there’s an
eclectic mix of bookshops, ancient wynds
and closes, nightclubs, theatres and
modern and traditional shopping. |
